So you found a piece of land on which to build your new home. Now, what home will suit your needs the best?

There are many questions to ask yourself. Some of the big ones to ask first are; do I want a single story home or one with an upstairs or downstairs? How many bathrooms do I need? What about the number of garage bays? What appliances will I need in my kitchen? Is energy efficiency important? Do I want an outdoor living space?

A good builder will guide you through the steps of choosing your features and amenities before any dirt is even moved. This way, you’ll know what’s included in your new home and the cost associated with it/them.

Once you have the floor plan and amenities selected, begin to customize or “stylize” your new home. Would you like to have vaulted ceilings, built-in cabinetry, faux beams, wall paper, etc. Again, your builder should be able to assist you with making these decisions, and there are also a number of resources to look for examples such as Pinterest and Houzz.

Most design studios have in-house designers that can prepare a color pallet of materials and finishes for you to consider. Providing them with photos or images of ideas that appeal to you can streamline that process.

Be sure to speak with your builder and let them know what your expectations are. Getting everyone on the same page and making selections as a team is imperative to the successful outcome of your new home.
